Australia December 2010

I spent almost a month in Australia this December, starting out in Brisbane, which is semi-tropical. For the first week it was quite rainy, though the fragipani were coming in bloom and smelled heavenly.

My good friend Wendy King took me round to see some amazing Christmas lights. I later found out that Walter is the uncle of the family I stayed with in Sydney. What a small world.

Wendy also had a very nice litter of Silky puppies, almost 5 weeks old.

Then it was onto Sydney, where I worked with a pair of soccer crazy red-headed twins, watched wild cockatoos soar overhead and listened to kookaburras cackle from the bushes.

Australia is fascinating. It's roadwork and commercial structure resemble Canada more than anywhere else. This makes sense when you realize they are both Commonwealth nations. But then, in the middle of that normal suburban lifestyle you smell the heavenly fragipani, or hear the kookaburra cackle and you know indeed that this is indeed not Kansas -- or even Toronto!
