It makes sense that even a comprehensive website like About Small Dogs would benefit from an dog advice column.
This happens to me all the time; I buy a "what's it", then I can't seem to get the thing going. I go on the website and get told a whole bunch of fascinating things, but none of them are exactly what I need. When I call Tech Support they have me up and running in 5 minutes.
By checking out About Small Dogs you may know by now what to do if your dog hates your husband (See Help! My Dog Hates My Husband) or if she suddenly decides that she would like to pee on your favorite carpet. (See the Cure for Dirty Dogs -- Potty Training for Adult Dogs.)
But what if I haven't covered your exact issue?
You can ask me.
I have breeding and showing Silky Terriers for the last 30 years. I have studied many other small dog breeds and have a wealth of crossover information from my profession as a pastoral counselor with a specialty in working with children. Kids aren't dogs and certainly dogs are not children, but working with the one does teach one a lot about working with the other. All this affords me a unique perspective in the field of small dog training and care.
Now obviously I can't guarantee results. I'm not looking over your shoulder -- I'm not even in the room -- and there may be aspects to your situation that I'm not aware of. But I will do the very best I can. If I don't know what to do, I'll have a friend -- or two or three -- who can help.
And if everything is perfect between you and your dog, it can be entertaining to hear what others have gotten themselves into. And maybe you can learn a piece of advice or two -- for future reference.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Good dog information can be hard to find.
Generic, cut and paste training tips are all over the web. But do they really work?
Sometimes you need advice from a real dog trainer who has won her knowledge through years of experience.
So please -- ask your questions and share your story, with pictures if possible. Give as much detail as you can, that really helps. And I'll do my best to give you an answer that is clear cut and do-able.
All solutions aren't easy in dog training, but there's no reason why they shouldn't be easy to understand.
