These are first and foremost a companion dog. They are small and muscular with a smooth coat, short face and signature bat ears. Well loved as calm and affectionate family members, they can brindle, fawn, white, and brindle and white.
Nottingham England lace-makers in the 19th century selectively bred the English Bulldog to be a lap pet. The Industrial Revolution displaced some lace-makers to France and of course they brought their "toy bulldogs" with them. There the pets proved so popular that the country called them their own.
Frenchies are definitely indoor dogs but will alert the family to strangers as well. Due to their shortened face, they must have air-conditioning in the summer and cannot be shipped by plane.
By the Numbers
Size: 28 lbs or less.
Coat Care: 2 – low. A Frenchie's short coat never requires brushing. They are susceptible to skin disorders and especially their wrinkly faces must be kept clean.
Trainability: 5 – medium. Frenchies enjoy being trained but are not as athletic as some breeds.
Energy level: 5. They enjoy a good walk but mostly just like to hang with their owners.
Good with Children: 8 – They are good with children and quite tolerant. However the kids must take care not to over exert their buddies.
Noise level: medium to high – 4: They are not noisy.
Low Shedding/hypoallergenic: – 4, medium They are short coated and do shed, but not much. They are however susceptible to skin allergies.
